PHUKET Long stretches of white sandy beach with turquoise blue water

I decided to spend the Christmas days in Phuket together with my family. Here you can find my itinerary and some good tips! You absolutely need to visit Phuket if you are looking for a place with many beautiful beaches , many Islands to explore (like James Bond one 😊) , Thai food , spending a day at the spa and watching beautiful Sunset!

Khao Phing Kan
Phuket is blessed with more than 40 fantastic beaches and more tropical islands than one could count in a holiday.
And that’s for Phuket only!
On Phi Phi you’ll see where Leonardo DiCaprio filmed The Beach and join the throngs of tourists wanting to take a photo. On Coral Island you can relax on the white sand beach just 15 minutes from Phuket. And on the Racha Islands, 12km south of Phuket, you can make the most of the excellent diving and snorkelling day trips. Here you will find my trip and itinerary.
The best time to visit Phuket is between November and April when weather conditions are ideal for beach activities, such as swimming and boating.

The high tourist season is from November to February when it’s cool and dry, after which it remains quite hot until May.The six months between May and October are monsoon season, and although accommodation prices are much lower this time of year, the water conditions can be dangerous.

Day 1 Kamala & Surin

Kamala is a gem, not far away Patong’s madness, but enough to enjoy the quiet and beautiful white sandy beach with the added bonus of great snorkeling. We booked a Penthouse with seaview (10min walking to the beach).

The first day we enjoyed an Italian-infused breakfast at Bocconcino. The rest of the day you can relax on Hat (means beach) Kamala – during the May to October monsoon, hire surfboards and take surfing classes at its southern end – or Hat Surin. A valide alternative is the famous Catch Beach Club.

Kamala was one of the Phuket’s worst hit areas during the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami (Tsunami Memorial close to the beach entrance).

Finish off with wine, beer and cocktails next door at Bimi Beach Club or Vanilla Sky high above the bay.

For our Christmas dinner , we booked ACQUA Restaurant (the first of a series of restaurants designed by Alessandro Frau).

Day 2 Trippin' Ko Phi Phi

TIPS: Arrive at Tha Rassada early to snag a good lounging spot: boats get crowded. If you’ve got time, stay overnight to exeperience Phi Phi notorious nightlife.

Boat over to Phi Phi Leh to retrace Leo Dicaprio’s steps in The Beach. There is a beautiful white sand beach fringed by dramatic limestone peaks or roam jungle paths among chattering birds into Loh Samah Bay. You will reach the Pileh Cove (Emerald Lagoon) and after that , explore Viking Cave, and Monkey Beach – you may even have a chance for a monkey selfie (don’t touch them).

Relax at Bamboo Island where you can sunbathe again on the white sand beach or snorkel over the coral reef and spot a variety of sea life , and you will finish the day visiting Maiton Island where you can snorkel in crystal clear water over the coral reef.

For diving I suggest King Cruiser Wreck.

For snorkeling , you go along eastern Ko Nok (near AO Ton Sai) and off Hat Yao (Long Beach) – if you are lucky you will see small sharks 🙂 .

Day 3 James Bond Island

James Bond Island

The best option is the day trip with a Phuket based operator. I decided to add the sea-canoeing trip as a day tour and to use the Longtail Boat from Phuket. (don’t forget your hat, swimsuit, sunnies and sunscreen!).

The tour is:

– visit to James Bond Island, Khao Phing Kan , Talu Island and Pan-Yee Island

– visit to the Buddha Cave at the temple of Wat Suwan Kuha

– entrance at Ao Phang Nga National Park

– sea canoening activity

Day 4 Ao Bang Thao

After two intensive days of excursions , we booked a taxi (Grab) to visit Ao Bang Thao – 8km long white sand beach.
If you want to explore the Laguna, you will find an old fishing village: here you can find the famous Bake (for breakfast/lunch) and Flame (for dinner/exotic cocktail). Then relax with a good old Thai massage at Thai Carnation  impressively professional with private massage rooms and local vibe (you must book in advance).

If you go there on Mondays, catch jazz at Siam Supper Club eating an excellent meal. The menu is international with gourmet pizzas and barbecued Tasmanian salmon.

Don’t forget to visit the Bang-Tao night market for clothes, shoes, jewellery, paintings (Monday/Wed/Saturday).

Day 5 Northern Beaches

If you get restless, roll out of bed and go to Hat Mai Khao, Hat Nai Yang and Nai Thon , the Phuket’s northwest coast. Hat Mau Khao is Phuket’s longest beach. Sea turtles lay eggs here between Novermber and February. Hat Nai Yang is good for snorkelling , surfing and kitesurfing during the monsoon. Behind is a long strip of seafood restaurants . Hat Nai Thon is famous for the golden sand. Swimming is good and there is a coral near the end of the bay.

Last 3 days - Hat Karon & Hat Kata

Karon Beach is usually deserted , so perfect if you want to relax! Kata tends to be busier but it’s not hard to find a nice spot for yourself. We found few waves (so be careful!)Sea kayaking, banana boat rides, waterskiing and wakeboards are some of the things to do on Karon Beach. You can rent snorkel equipment from vendors on the beach. There is a good choice of Thai seafood restaurants (between the beach and Karon Lake).

On Kata you can also enjoy surfing , SUP , diving and snorkelling. Fantastic viewpoints bars like Chang Cafe and Som Tam Yay Tik.If you would like ride the waves , regardless the weather conditions, go to Surf House Phuket (high-pressure wave generating machine) .

Don’t miss the Big Buddha (11km from Kata/Karon) the 45mt-high statue.
