NEW YORK CITY TOP 10 THINGS TO DO

It's hard to choose what the best things to do in NYC are, as one of the world's leading metropolises for art, fashion, food and theater!

What's In This Article

New York is a city every traveler should visit. Whether you come for a day trip or for an extended stay, choosing what to see and do is the toughest part – the possibilities are endless. Travel to most corners of Manhattan and you will find groups from various other countries who have carved out their own little piece of the American Dream. In just a 20 minute walk you can travel through both Italy and China!

The best time to visit New York City is from April to June and from September to early November when the weather is warm and pleasant. The cheapest time to visit New York is on weekends from mid-January to the end of February.

10 Things to do in New York

1.Visit Central Park

Central Park is on everyone’s must-see list when visiting New York City. It’s not just an oasis of green within this busy city, it’s a place to go for art, music, entertainment, and even boating on the lake.

Be warned; the park is huge. Don’t rush through one of the best features of the entire city. You have roughly 1.5 miles and approximately 30 minutes of walking time. I would definitely plan on 2 hours, possibly more.

The park is home to scenic hills, meadows, playgrounds, skating rinks, ball fields and many well-known attractions, including Strawberry Fields, Belvedere Castle, and the Central Park Zoo.

The Central Park Conservancy offers free walking tours. The tours last one to one-and-a-half hours, and they have over ten different walks available.

For movie buffs, you can take a movie tour of Central Park locations where movies were filmed.

Keep in mind that most of the crimes that do happen in Central Park happen at night.

2. Take in Times Square at Night

Times Square is not really a square. What is technically Times Square is the four quarters created where 7th Ave. and Broadway intersects in Midtown Manhattan. However, most New Yorkers refer to the larger neighborhood as Times Square, which stretches north and south from 40th St. to roughly 52nd St. and east and west from 8th Ave to 6th Ave.

Times Square is one of the best places to sit and watch the world rush past. The ”crossroads of the world” as it is known, is jam-packed with free entertainers as well. See for yourself via their real-time webcam!

3. See the Statue of Liberty (Ellis Island)

The Statue of Liberty is a symbol of freedom, inspiration, and hope, an icon, a national treasure, and one of the most recognizable figures in the world.

Check here GetYourGuide tour ticket.

Origins of the Statue of Liberty: Around 1865, as the American Civil War drew to a close, the French historian Edouard de Laboulaye proposed that France create a statue to give to the United States in celebration of that nation’s success in building a viable democracy.

4. Go to the Coney Island

Coney Island is home to a wide variety of fauna and flora, some of which are critically endangered. Some plants at the park are presumed nationally extinct in the wild.

Download the park map for more information.

Here few tips I got from the official website park:

– The park is closed from 7pm to 7am.

– Terrain is rugged at parts and may be unsuitable for younger children.

– To maintain the rustic character of the park and as part of our efforts to preserve the park’s natural habitat, there is no electricity or piped water on the island. Please bring water with you when you visit the park.

– Please wear long pants and covered shoes for protection from insects such as sandflies.

– Do keep to the designated trails and appreciate any animals you may see from afar. If you encounter Long-tailed Macaques, keep a safe distance and do not feed them.

– Do avoid visiting the park during a storm, or seek shelter immediately if it rains while you are within the park.

– Please remember to take only what you have brought in, and leave nothing behind but footprints.

5. Visit the Grand Central Terminal

Located at 42nd Street and Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, Grand Central is a world-famous landmark and transportation hub in Midtown Manhattan. Its rich history is a story of immense wealth and great engineering, but also of survival and rebirth. The tracks are on two levels, with 41 tracks in the upper and 26 tracks in the lower level.

6.Rockefeller Center and Top of the Rock Observation Deck

If you want to immortalize New York City from the top, The Rockefeller Center is the best one! Top of the Rock is a three-level observation deck that consists of the 67th, 69th and 70th floors of 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

If you are looking for a quiet time and want to avoid crowds, visit Top of the Rock between 8 am to 11 am, the sunset hours are quite busy with lots of visitors and even longer waiting lines.

Tickets are timed so you can choose to pick the perfect time for your visit. Check this website.

From the top of the Rockefeller Center, you will get breathtaking views that stretch for miles in every direction. You’ll see New York’s famous landmarks, including the Empire State Building, Times Square, the Hudson River, the East River, Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty.

7. National September 11 Memorial & Museum

The 9/11 Memorial is a tribute of remembrance, honoring the 2,977 people killed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center site, near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon, as well as the six people killed in the World Trade Center bombing on February 26, 1993.

Also called Ground Zero, originated as a term to describe the site of a nuclear explosion and later was used to refer to the point of any dramatic or violent event.

You could easily spend a long afternoon at the Memorial Museum, but two hours is enough time to see everything and experience the entirety of the space, starting with the 15-minute introductory film. Once you descend into the actual museum space, take your time moving through it.

8. American Museum of Natural History

This museum is incredible: there are approximately 32 million artifacts inside, spread across four city blocks, 25 buildings and through 45 exhibition halls, so don’t even plan on seeing everything in one day.

9. Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the country, six-lanes (and one pedestrian and bicycle walkway) span the East River, connecting Manhattan to Brooklyn. Walking across the bridge remains a tourist pastime.

For a unique perspective of the bridge, consider signing up for boat tour, many of which pass under the iconic landmark.

10. Broadway

Broadway is a wide street in New York City. It runs the full length of Manhattan. It starts at the island’s southern tip at Bowling Green. The street continues all the way to its northern tip at Inwood. Broadway is the oldest north-south street in New York City. It existed as a path traveled by American Indians long before Europeans arrived. Today, there are many famous sites along the several miles of Broadway. But one small stretch comes to mind when most people hear the word “Broadway.” It’s the stretch between 42nd and 53rd streets—including Times Square—that is considered the home of the American theater industry.

Where to stay in NYC

If it’s the first time in NYC, I suggest to stay in Broadway Theater District for great subway connections and convenient to sightseeing.

Best Places to Stay in New York City:

– for Sightseeing: Midtown the heart of New York shopping and theater and home to some of its most iconic buildings.

– for Nightlife: Meatpacking District home to many popular cafes and dance clubs.

– for Families: Upper West Side where hotels offer family accommodations and the area is served by two subway lines and several buses, making it easy to get around.
