MOSCOW Funky, brighter, darker and modern big city

Moscow is a tricky city. It’s big and fast, people always run somewhere, traffic is hard, weather could be completely different: from real cold to scorching heat. However, it’s an amazing one. There are dozens of reasons to come. Being one of the most breathtaking capitals in the world, Moscow has a wide range of entertainments and cultural hot spots.

When to Go: The high season for traveling to Russia is May through October. This is the best time to tour Russia and admire its masterpieces like fountains of Peterhof, parks of Pushkin and quaint countryside of the Golden Ring.
However, during summers main tourist routes are crowded and sometimes even impossible to access. So the best time to visit Russia is in inter-seasons like late spring and early fall.

Things to See in Moscow's Red Square

Red Square is located in the center of the city, it is 330 meters long and 70 meters wide. In 1990, the whole of the Red Square and the Kremlin were declared World Heritage by Unesco.

The Red Square is for me the most beautiful square in the world 🙂

TIPS: I recommend you visit also the Red Square at night to see the wonderful illumination.

It is said that the name the square does not refer to the red color of communism or the color of the bricks that surround it but it is actually derived from the Russian word Krasnaya (Красная), which means “red”, but in old Russian it meant “pretty “, that is, the pretty square. During the last years, several concerts of world-renowned performers have taken place there: Pink Floyd, Scorpions or Paul McCartney.

Every year, on May 9, the anniversary of the Great Patriotic War (World War II) is celebrated in the Red Square, with the so-called military parade of Victory Day.

St. Basil's Cathedral

ST.BASIL’S CATHEDRAL

Officially known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this church is one of the icon of Moscow. Among other things, religion was severely prohibited during the Soviet period, which led some to believe that this emblem of the Russian Orthodox church might not withstand the tenure of the USSR.  An interesting fact is that St. Basil’s is the so-called “Kilometer Zero” of Russia; all of Moscow’s main roads (which can take you anywhere in Russia) begin at the exits to Red Square.

THE KREMLIN

The word Kremlin means fortress or fortified city. In Russia there are more than 20 Kremlins (Moscow Kremlin, Kazan Kremlin, Novgorod Kremlin, etc.). The most famous in Russia is the Moscow Kremlin whose meaning since the Soviet era has been transformed and become synonymous with the Government of Russia.

Within the walls of the Kremlin (and outside) you will find the most varied monuments, museums and buildings: the presidential and administrative government buildings, the Great Kremlin Palace, the congress palace, the main Russian museum (the Armory), as well as 4 cathedrals. Except presidential and administrative buildings, the rest are open to tourists.

THE ALEXANDER GARDENS

The entrance to the Kremlin is not through the Red Square but through the western part, where Alexander’s Gardens, one of the first public parks in Moscow, are located. There you will find the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a monument dedicated to Soviet soldiers fallen in World War II, in the center of which burns the eternal flame, guarded by the Honor Guard of the Presidential Regiment.

The guard shift change is done every hour (look the video):the entry to Alexander’s Gardens is free.

TASTE IMPRESSIONS

I was surprised by the variety and flavors of Russian traditional food. A great many can be described as «divine», and it will have you searching for the recipes when you return home!

Russian cuisine is famous for exotic soups, cabbage schi and solyanka, which is made of assorted meats, pancakes with different fillings, and of course, caviar. Russians are great lovers of pelmeni, small Siberian meat pies boiled in broth.

There are a lot of restaurants, providing national food. From very budget «Elki-Palki», to numerous luxurious restaurants like «Café Pouchkine». There you can not only taste Russian delicacies, but also plunge into the atmosphere of the XIX century Russia.

SPECTACULAR VIEWS

Here are the places with splendid views over Moscow:

- Federation Tower is a set of two high-rise towers, located in the Moscow City Business District. The 61st floor of the Tower West accommodates the highest restaurant in Moscow – «Sixty».

- The main building of the Moscow State University was built in the years 1949-1953 and its total height is 182 meters, with a spire – 240 meters. On the top floor there is a Museum of Geography with a panoramic view of Moscow.

- The observation deck of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior can be reached only in the excursions. There you can get a really exciting view of the Moscow center.

- The building of the Russian Academy of Science is called «golden brains» due to the original constructions of its roof. It stands on the high riverbank and opens a charming view of the whole Moscow. «Sky Lounge» restaurant is situated on the 21st floor.

BUNKER42 is an amazing TUNNEL SYSTEM snaking beneath the streets of Moscow, leading to a secret cold war fortress.

Designed and built after the first series of nuclear tests by the Soviet Union, these tests revealed that the optimum depth for the bunker’s silo must be no higher than 165 feet beneath ground in order to survive nuclear fallout intact. The task for the builders was enormous: construct a gigantic structure beneath the city streets without damaging Moscow’s existing infrastructure of streets and communication pathways. To do so would alert the public and innumerable unknown spies to the existence of the bunker, thereby rendering the entire (read: top-secret) thing useless.

Today, the space exists as a historical monument that is equal parts museum to what life was like on the Soviet side of the Iron Curtain during the Cold War era and tour of the previously top-secret bunker itself, bringing visitors below ground to a time when the world lived on the constant brink of nuclear annihilation. A variety of tour packages are available at all hours of the day, catering to a range of ages, some of which focus more on the historical aspects of the space, while other take a nearly comic angle on the tangible threat of nuclear annihilation for all humankind.
