Spend a few days in Ubud to appreciate it properly (my journey 5days) ; I booked a nice place in Ubud and then we moved to the south for the beaches and Nusa Penida tour.
Remember to book everything in advance as July is the second-busiest month (after August) for visitors to Bali! REFILL YOUR WATER BOTTLE (the number of plastic water bottles here is colossal!!!)

WHY GO
WHEN TO GO
Day 1 Ubud - Eat Pray Love
The first day in Ubud , we rented a scooter (better than a car as the traffic is awful). We started with the classic loop of Monkey Forest Rd down to the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary . It’s a jungle officially called Mandala Wisata Wanara Wana , houses three holy temples. You can enter through one of the three gates and I invite you to avoid eye contact with the monkeys , showing your teeth (smiling too) which is a sign of aggression. You can buy bananas to feed them but there is no need for this as most are already chubby. Then coming back up along Hanoman , you can spend hours exploring the shops, restaurants and galleries, stopping into cafes. On many nights you can watch a dance performance in Pura Taman Saraswati.
Day 2 Ubud - Bedulu
Ubud Royal Palace (Puri Saren Agung Ubud),is one of the attractions in Ubud that you should visit. Therefore, many tour agencies offer tour package with visiting Puri Saren Palace Ubud listed on their tour itinerary. The location of Puri Saren Agung is in the center of Ubud.  Most visitors are wearing short and sandal when entering the palace ground. Therefore there is no specific dress code. If you want to wear a sarong it is also fine.(Sarong is a long flowing piece of fabric that is typically wrapped around the waste. It is soft and comfortable and often has colourful patterns).
Close to the Ubud Palace, there is the Pura Taman Saraswati , hindu temple decorated with carvings honouring Dewi Saraswati, the goddness of wisdom and the arts.Â
If you have a scooter , reach Bedulu and visit the Goa Gajah and Yeh Pulu. Goa Gajan is carved into a rock face and you can enter inside the mouth of a demon. In front of the cave are two square bathing pools with six female figures. Yeh Pulu can be accessed via a 45-minute walk from Goa Gajah; it’s advisable to bring a guide, since Yeh Pulu is not only beautiful, but also very obscure. Besides the rock carvings that depict the everyday life in ancient Bali, Yeh Pulu is also home to a holy well, from which a temple attendant will happily bless visitors with its holy water.
At the end of the day, visiting a spa or practicing yoga is a MUST in Bali!Â
Day 3 Jatiluwih Rice fields and Central Mountains
Wake up early! It will be a long day..I suggest to book a driver guide for a private tour so you don’t have to deal with the local crazy traffic!
The first stop is Jatiluwih rice fields : you will be rewarded with vistas of centeries-old rice terraces (Unesco). You can walk for 18km inside of the rice fields : take your time and find a place to sit and enjoy the view! There are cafes along the route.
Proceeding, you will reach an important Hindu-Buddhist temple Pura Ulun Danu Bratan. It’s dedicated to Dewi Danu , the goddness of waters and is built on small islands – don’t miss the Candikuning a roadside market where you can find locals shopping for fruit, veg, spices and plants.
The Munduk road on the hill above the Danau Buyan & Danau Tamblingan lakes has incredible views.
Finally you will see the Munduk waterfall (Air Terjun Munduk) hidden in the mountains -just a short 15 minute trek down from the parking area, and across a rickety old bamboo bridge, you’ll find a a single stream of water flowing from high in the forest.
Day 4 East Bali
We booked again a driver for the East side: Bali’s coast road is a scenic route (black-sand beaches, rice fields and temples).
In 2hs (depending on traffic) you will reach the famous holy temple Taman Tirta Gangga (Water of the Ganges) ; it is a relaxing place to stop for 1h. It is a former royal palace that’s been turned into beautiful open gardens ,a lovely maze of pools and fountains surround by a lush garden and stone carvings and statues. You can bathe in the pools for 10,000Rp which is additional to the Rp 30,000 entrance fee. There is also of course the insta famous stepping stones that lead around the centre piece – an 11 tier fountain. You can feed the fish in the area and capture a memorable photo at Tirta Gangga to end your visit.
About 30min walk from Tira Gangga , you reach the base of the stairs of Pura Lempuyang the famous Instagram hotspot ( 1700step climb up the side othe 768m hill). I have to reveal the truth of gates of heaven photos. The lake seen beside the Pura Lempuyang Luhur in photos is actually an illusion created by a photographer who sits under an umbrella and holds a mirror underneath an iPhone to create the reflection (or a $1 or $2 donation). I loved walking around the grounds of the temple. It’s really suggestive!
Day 5 Bali Swing
This is worth a visit if you’re looking to experience the freedom and thrill of swinging high above the trees. To make easy how to find and where to get best swing in Bali check the TIPS session here. If you’re not a fan of heights but still want a beautiful photo to take away from the experience, consider one of their many ‘Hanging Nests’ that are scattered around the playground. Wedged between two enormous palm trees, these nest-like structures serve as look-out points but also make for good spots for photos.
After the Bali Swing tour , you can relax and book a table in Bambu Indah – a bamboo wonderland in Bali’s leafy center; every room has breathtaking views over Sayan Ridge. Non-hotel-guests are welcome in the rustic Bambu Indah Kitchen. Tables overlook a permaculture garden, which supplies the organic ingredients that serve as the base of the Indonesian menu.
Day 6 Nusa Penida
There are few tours but I suggest to check first the link here : you can choose 1 day or 3days.
There are not a lot of formal activities or sights , rather you go here to relax and explore (famous for diving, cycling)
Our trip started around the island from North to East and crossing the hilly interior. One day is not enough if you want to visit the small villages and temples. The classic tour is:
– Angel’s Billabong and Broken Beach (Pasih Uug Beach)
– Kelingking Beach (Instagram spot)
– Tanglad a very old-fashioned village (a scenic ridgetop road goes northwest from Tanglad)
– Crystal Bay Beach – the sand here is light with palm trees.
Day 7 South Bali
We spent the last 2 days exploring the Kuta & Seminyak (beaches and nightlife).
Kuta Beach extends for 12km (Legian, Seminyak, Kerobokan and Canggu) with bars, vendors and restaurants. Some have beautiful sunset views, while clubs and bars become manic in Kuta. Don’t miss the Bali Sea Turtle Society (hatchery) – if you pay small donation you can join the group to release them from April to October.
Seminyak is famous for shopping , home of restaurants and clubs. Because of the limit road access, you will find less people than in Kuta : enjoy with your drink , the magic sunset or relax in Seminyak’s spas (Jari Menari) .
You can reach Kerobokan beach from Seminyak beach or by walking down from Batubelig Beach : there are some good places for drink or you can just walk till the popular Echo Beach.
Day 8 Beaches
On Saturdays there is a party on the beach at Padang Padang with grilled seafood (the beach bar scene of Eat Pray Love was filmed here).
Leave the Impossibles Beach to the surfers or if you love surfing , move to Ulu Watu Beach (Bali’s biggest and most powerful wave). Pura Luhur Uluwatu is atemple located in Pecatu Village on a high rock platform that juts into the sea. Located at an altitude of 97meters above sea level, is a suggestive place to visit.
A little piece of paradise is Sundays Beach Club (check availability and price as it’s quite expensive) .
Day 9 Bubble Hotel
I booked two nights here and I would to spend few words in case you would like to try this experience.
There are 3 hotels located in three differen locations in Bali.
If you choose the one on the beach , it’s not for children or family : there is a difficult descent from the mountain through the jungle ~ 20 minutes, you are isolated and you cannot move from the beach during the night. It means that it’s a full experience with the nature, without internet or connections with the rest of the world! There are few Bubble rooms , each one far away from the others and there is 1 ball with a private pool. Air conditioning in each room and you can book the food directly to the staff.
It’s a romantic place you will remember forever….
Day 10 Denpasar - Last Day
Bali’s capital is a chaotic but nice place and we spend little time here before to leave Bali. We visited the Museum Negerei and Bajra Sandhi Monument.Â
Walking on the street , you will find large chain supermarkets and public ones where you can buy Balinese goods, ceremonial clothes and foods.
For dinner I suggest the Sands Restaurant (typical Balinese food) and fantastic coctkails!Â
