Costiera Sorrentina

Visiting Sorrento during the month of October is a great choice for those who can afford a vacation in the autumn, and are looking for enchanting views without the summer crowds. You will have the opportunity to visit one of the most picturesque landscapes in the world, during one of the best time of the year.
Vico Equense

VICO EQUENSE

It’s a small town on the Bay of Naples, very close to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. The name “Vico” derives from the Latin vicus, it mean village, group of homes, while “Equense” also derives from the Latin term Aequana which was an ancient town which was destroyed by the Goths. Vico Equense is characterized by the large size of the territory, in fact in one day, you can have a swim in the crystal clear waters  of Marina di Vico and  have a pleasant walk in Monte Faito at about 1,331 meters, a mountain chain in the Monti Lattari – it’s a great place to get some coolness on hot summer days.

You can easily drive from Vico Equense or through a cable car from Castellammare di Stabia , a smaller but beautiful upcoming tourist destination that is worth a visit. You will be surprised by some of the unique things to do and places you can explore at this hidden destination.  From here you have a fantastic view of the  Mount Vesuvius  the volcano that destroyed the ancient Roman town (Pompeii check the website for the tour) with the eruption of 79AD.

Things to do in Vico

SORRENTO

When you arrive in Sorrento , you will probably start from the modern Piazza Lauro. From here, walk down Corso Italia (the main shopping thoroughfare) to Piazza Tasso (the perfect place to stop for an espresso or cocktail). Along the Corso, stop to visit Sorrento’s cathedral, then, at the end of the Corso, turn right and then right again…you’ll find yourself in the charming historic lanes of Sorrento’s old town.

Take a few minutes to walk a few meters up Viale Enrico Caruso, and take in the view over the railing down to the dramatic “Valley of the Mills” .

Via San Cesareo is one of the oldest streets in town, until your reach Sedil Dominova. From here, take Via Reginaldo Giuliani down to the entrance to the Villa Comunale park, here you’ll find the Church of San Francesco on your right.

From the Villa Comunale you get few pictures of the breathtaking view from here over the Sorrento coastline with Mount Vesuvius in the distance. From here, you can walk down to the port and beach clubs in Marina Grande below, or take the elevator (perfect place to stop for lunch with numerous waterfront resturants specialized in local cuisine fresh fish and seafood).

As alternative you can reach Piazza Vittoria, another beautiful scenic overlook, and then following the road down to the historic fishing village of Marina Grande.

If you still have time visit the Museo Correale di Terranova.

Also called the town between two seas on one side, the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius, on the other , the Bay of Salerno, the islets of Li Galli and the Amalfi Coast. Opposite, almost within swimming distance, Capri.

The remains of a number of necropolis testify to the presence of the Ancient Greeks and the Etruscans in the area surrounding the town of Sant’Agata, which in the 19th century, became an obligatory port of call on the Grand Tour.

CASTELLAMMARE DI STABIA

The town enjoys a beautiful location between beaches and hills. It is blessed with multiple natural springs (28 of them, each with its own therapeutic characteristics) that have made Castellammare a popular resort since antiquity.

The Romans called it Stabiae and it was popular among the VIPs of the day including Cicero who used to spend his vacations here.

In the 9th century, the citizens build Castrum a Mare, the castle that lent the town its modern name.

The town has been a busy port renowned for its shipyards since the time of the Bourbons.

I will create a dedicated post with the things to do here! Stay Tuned!

Costiera Amalfitana

The pristine fifty kilometer Amalfi Coast is one of the most desirable sun-soaked destinations in Italy.

TIPS: the best time to see the Amalfi Coast is from April to June, when the spring flowers are in bloom, the weather is just warm enough, and the temperature of the Mediterranean allows for the first dips of the season. By choosing late spring or early summer, you can also avoid the tourist crush of July and August and the oppressive temperatures later in the year.

Fiordo di Furore

AMALFI

You will be fascinated by the singular architecture of white houses of Amalfi and the good climate for almost the entire the year!

Amalfi is a valid target also for gourmets and gourmands, where they were invented the “cannelloni”.

Its foundation goes back to the Romans; from the ninth century, it was the first of the the Marine Republics and rivaled Pisa, Venice and Genoa for the control of the Mediterranean Sea.

How to reach Amalfi: It is served regularly by public transportation, SITA buses run to Amalfi from Salerno in 50 minutes. From April to October sea connections, by ferries and private boats, are available from Naples and Salerno. If you are intent on reaching the other towns of the Amalfi Coast, Piazza Flavio Gioia in Amalfi is the departure point of the buses.

My list as top things to do in Amalfi are:

– Visit the Amalfi Cathedral

– Get lost in the Valle delle Ferriere behind the city of Amalfi (here you can see a rich tropical vegetation, as well as waterfalls and springs, which are the natural habitat of rare plants and amphibians)

– Enjoy a superlative seafood lunch with a glass of limoncello

– Trekking on the Path of the Gods

– Ceramics of Vietri sul Mare

POSITANO

Positano s located on the southern arm of the Amalfi coast and is accessible by bus and it’s often considered to be one of the most picturesque towns on the Amalfi coast and it is easy to see why when you look at the beautiful coloured houses.

TIPS: if you can, take a boat out and try to take in the whole of Positano from the waters – the panorama of the houses and mountains is simply amazing.

The beach of Positano is the perfect place to relax and you can find a plethora of quality cafes, restaurants and bars on the winding streets.

Where to eat:

– Da Vincenzo Positano

– Terrazza Celè

– Da Gabrisa Restaurant & Wine Bar

RAVELLO

Ravello is the city of music, a medieval village with lush gardens, and breathtaking views of the Mediterranean.

Top things to do here are:

– Visit the gardens of Villa Cimbrone

– Attend a classical music concert of the Ravello Festival

– Enjoying the breathtaking view of the Amalfi Coast from Villa Rufolo

NERANO – the fishing village

The village is said to have acquired its name after the emperor Tiberius Nerone built a summer residence here.

As in the times of the Roman Empire, Nerano and Sant’Agata continue to attract well-heeled holidaymakers with their beautiful little beaches and secluded coves.

PRAIANO

Praiano is located in-between Amalfi and Positano with enchanting views as you can see out to sea for miles.

Consider walking down to the enclosed harbour and beach and taking a dip in the warm waters, or enjoying a delicious ice-cream from one of the stalls.
