MANCHESTER Top things to do

I had chance to spend 2 days here in Manchester and to watch Manchester football match VS Arsenal. Here a list of top things to see and to do.

What's In This Article

OLD TRAFFORD MUSEUM AND FOOTBALL CLUB

Manchester is perhaps best known for Manchester United Football Club, and fans can get the full experience on a trip to the club’s training ground at Old Trafford. Also known as the Theatre of Dreams, with the field itself dating back to 1910.

The Museum & Stadium Tour at Old Trafford takes you behind the scenes at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ for a great day out. Go behind the scenes at one of the world’s most popular and most successful football clubs on a Manchester United Stadium Tour. Since the club’s formation in 1878 Manchester United have won 64 trophies, with Old Trafford stadium at the heart of their success.

A Matchday VIP Experience at Manchester United is the ultimate way to get closer to the action on the pitch, the history of Old Trafford and the prestige of one of the greatest football clubs in the world. I was so excited to attend the football match Manchester vs Arsenal!

MANCHESTER CATHEDRAL

Quiet and peaceful, it may not be as huge as other city-centre Cathedrals, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in interesting features.

The Cathedral is mostly medieval with some Gothic extensions added on in Victorian times. Built from limestone and sandstone, the Cathedral’s been damaged by both the Blitz and an IRA bombing in 1996, but has been lovingly restored since then. It now has one of the finest collections of new stained glass in the country, thanks to 2016’s Hope window and artist Anthony Hollaway’s Wall of Light, a stunning installation created by the five windows along the west wall.

There’s also a brand new Stoller organ to admire, but that’s where the newness ends because inside the Cathedral oozes history – not surprising when you consider most of the building dates back to 1215. Taking a free guided tour is a great way to make sure you don’t miss out on some of its finer features, like the life-size choir of carved angels in the nave or the tiny Angel stone – an intricate carving that dates back to Saxon times.

MANCHESTER ART GALLERY

Here you will find works that go back to the pre-Raphaelite period as well as works by famous local artists like Lowry (see more below). It’s most certainly one of the best things to do in Manchester if you love a big slice of culture.

There is also a real and meaningful attempt to contextualise the art in the gallery with modern interpretation. This makes the experience doubly enjoyable and interesting. There is a lift making the upper floors accessible. Usual shop with expensive but quality gifts , fridge magnets and postcards. Very friendly volunteers. Optional £3 donations.

THE LOWRY

Lowry was Manchester’s most prominent artist, and this cultural venue is dedicated to showcasing the best of his works.

You can see Lowry’s paintings in the main gallery and there are also other shows such as musical performances and theatrical pieces held here from time to time.

ALBERT SQUARE

This is a lovely square, serviced by trams so easy to walk to and easy to get to by public transport. Around the square you can find a variety of things to do and places to eat. It is home to the huge and rather impressive Manchester city hall, which is almost reason in itself to pop by the area.

The square is also home to a myriad of stunning buildings and is definitely one place worth visiting to get a sense of Manchester’s architectural prowess and history.

THE IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM

As the name suggests, the Imperial War Museum takes visitors on a walk through military history. There is a range of interactive and static exhibits here and the museum sits on The Quays, another iconic area of Manchester.

There’s a lot more to IWM North than its striking looks – the whole building was designed to enhance the stories within and give visitors a multisensory experience of war.
